I love trying mascaras. Mascara is second on my list of products I love, right after lipstick. I have tried all sorts and currently have 4 waiting for me to try. Good thing I just finished up my 2 open tubes!
This round of trials I am going with this bargain from Essence. How will it compare to other lash-enhancing black formulas I have tried? Will it be good for my sensitive eyes?
Essence might not be a brand you have ever heard of unless you scour Ulta or are one of the few lucky Walgreen's shoppers to have a display at your location. I love to roam Ulta but I had never really bought any makeup from them although they have a ton of cheap and awesome nail polish/nail art supplies.
I finally decided to pick up a tube of their mascara after reading a review on Nouveau Cheap's site. I was out of both my fancy mascara and one I used for everyday, so I decided to go get a tube. It was cheap, G recommended it for everyone, and I really just wanted something that made my lashes look pretty, not necessarily like I was going out (the falsies look).
The first thing I notice on opening the tube was there was no smell. Thank heavens!
Then, I saw the brush and was happy. A nice, normal, plastic bristled brush, in a shape I could use. Weehhuu! Sometimes mascara wands are just scary and complicated and way too much.
I wasn't expecting the absolute perfect mascara when using this, but I was surprised. It was just about perfect for $4.99. That's right. $4.99. And Ulta runs sales and you can use those $3.50 off $10.00 coupons on this brand.
It was easy to use, added some volume, some length, and some curl to my lashes. Since I don't need waterproof formulas, this really worked. It didn't flake the whole nine hours I wore it and it didn't break my lashes when I removed it.
Also, wonder of wonders, it did not bother my eyes. Sometimes, products cause my eyes and surrounding skin to swell. It hurts, it looks bad, and I hate having to throw away products when they do this to me. I accidentally got some flakes of this in my eye one day and gasp! Not a single problem! WOOOO! Massive points!!!!

Essence Lash Mania Reloaded, one application. |
Isn't the effect lovely? It really does rival mascaras more than 4 times it's price.
There were two minor problems with it though, but very minor. It was semi-wet when applied which means you have to let it dry a bit. It isn't a big problem, just be careful. I have applied worse--looking at you Pur The Big Blink!
The other "problem" was it was a bit stubborn to come off. It wouldn't remove easy with my makeup wipes, but it did with an oil-based remover. Just be aware of these if you chose to buy.
Otherwise, I completely agree with G--this mascara should work for everyone. It is a delightful, cheap, and effective formula for just about everyone. It isn't too much, it doesn't stink, it doesn't flake, it is just good.
You can find Essence at Ulta stores or online for $4.99.
TL;DR--CHEAP. EFFECTIVE WITHOUT BEING OVER THE TOP. NOT WATERPROOF.
